Getty Images Sunday afternoon didn’t go so well on the court for Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury. Dealing with foul trouble all day long, Taurasi was limited to 17 points and turned the ball over six times in the Mercury’s Game 1 loss to the Chicago Sky in the 2021 WNBA Finals.
Off the court, however, things were a lot better. In the culmination of the league’s “Vote for the GOAT” campaign, Taurasi was voted by fans as the best player in league history. During a special ceremony, Taurasi was presented with a “GOAT” basketball by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
“Congratulations to Diana Taurasi on being voted as the Greatest WNBA player of all time by the fans who have followed her illustrious career and saw her rise above the rest,” Engelbert said. “This well-deserved recognition reflects her sustained excellence on the court and her leading role in advancing the WNBA and women’s basketball and being a role model for young athletes everywhere.”
Earlier this year, in celebration of the WNBA’s 25th anniversary, the league announced its official list of the 25 greatest players. Taurasi was on that list, of course, along with teammate Brittney Griner and Sky forward Candace Parker, who are also participating in this series.
Once that list was announced, the league then allowed fans to submit their votes for the GOAT. The voting took place last month, and the results were announced on Sunday. Taurasi was the winner, with Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Parker and Cynthia Cooper rounding out the top-five.
This is just a fan vote, and those can obviously be skewed by a number of factors. But whether you agree with the results or not, there’s no question that Taurasi deserves to be in the conversation. She’s the league’s all-time leading scorer, and has won three titles, two Finals MVPs and an MVP to go along with 14 All-WNBA selections and 10 All-Star Game appearances.
