Notre Dame football 2024 practice storylines: Camp news, depth chart predictions from Fighting Irish insiders
Written by CBS SPORTS ALL RIGHTS RESERVED on August 11, 2024
Notre Dame has won 11 national championships throughout its storied history. The Fighting Irish have made the College Football Playoff twice since 2018, but they’re 0-2 in those games. Head coach Marcus Freeman will try to lead the Irish back to the College Football Playoff, which is expanding from four to 12 teams this season. Freeman is entering his third full year with the program and the pressure is building for him to produce a winning Notre Dame football roster.
The Fighting Irish haven’t ranked higher than 15th at any point in the College Football Playoff Rankings during Freeman’s two years at the helm. Notre Dame posted a respectable 10-3 record last season, but the Fighting Irish will have to replace the majority of their production on offense from a season ago in a new Notre Dame football depth chart. Replacing standout left tackle Joe Alt will be a top priority for Freeman. Alt, who became the Irish’s first unanimous All-American tackle in 30 years last season, was the No. 5 overall draft pick. He skipped Notre Dame’s bowl game, allowing freshman Charles Jagusah to start in the 40-8 blowout victory over Oregon State. Jagusah seems poised to secure the position for 2024 despite having played in just two games last year.
With right tackle Blake Fisher also heading to the NFL, Notre Dame faces uncertainty at both tackle spots. Tosh Baker and Aamil Wagner are anticipated to compete for the right tackle position, but Guerby Lambert is also a strong contender. The freshman, who enrolled early in January, was ranked as the eighth-best tackle prospect in his class by 247Sports. Get more updates on the Notre Dame RB at Irish Illustrated.
Wide receiver is one of the biggest question marks for Notre Dame’s offense heading into the 2024 season. Graduate transfers Kris Mitchell, Beaux Collins and Jayden Harrison produced 130 catches for 2,038 yards and 11 touchdowns last fall. That’s almost double the production the Fighting Irish lost with the departures of wideouts Chris Tyree, Rico Flores and Tobias Merriweather.
However, the most important addition to the Notre Dame pass game will likely be a healthy Mitchell Evans. Standing at 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Evans provides a security blanket for the quarterback to check down to in important situations. In eight games last season, Evans hauled in 29 passes for 422 yards and a touchdown and led all Notre Dame pass-catchers with 24 first-down conversions. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL last October, limiting him thus far this fall. When Notre Dame’s fall camp began, Evans trotted out with the first-team offense, but the staff limited his reps during 7-on-7 and scrimmage periods.
