The National Women’s Soccer League has a new single-season scoring record holder. Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga scored her 19th goal of the season, a game-winner, on the road against Bay FC at PayPal Park on Saturday night. The Malawian international broke the 2019 regular season record of 18 goals in a single season held by former Chicago Red Stars striker and Australian international Sam Kerr.

Chawinga has had remarkable performances throughout her first year in the NWSL. She was an offseason signing for Kansas City and has scored against 12 different NWSL clubs. She has become a difficult mark for opposing teams, and often beats players in defensive positions, whether it’s during an effective counter press or using their momentum against them. She’s a nightmare to lockdown.

Take a look at the record-breaking goal here:

“[It] means a lot to me because it’s a very difficult league, but I try my best and I need to work hard to score goals,” Chawinga said in postgame comments. “So, I thank my teammates, and I thank God for giving me this chance to be here in the USA (and) play over here.”

She tied the single-season record last week with a goal against Racing Lousiville FC, just two minutes into the game. When Kansas City Current host San Diego Wave FC next week at home in CPKC Stadium, she’ll have a chance to set another record — to score against all 13 opposing teams in a single season.
