The Ole Miss Rebels and the Tennessee Volunteers are set to square off in an SEC matchup at 7:30 p.m. ET Oct. 16 at Neyland Stadium. It was all tied up 31-31 between Ole Miss and the Arkansas Razorbacks going into the fourth quarter last week, but the Rebels pulled a 52-51 win out of their hat in the final minutes. Yes, you read that final score correctly. And yes, they were playing football. QB Matt Corral went supernova for Ole Miss as he passed for two TDs and 287 yards on 21 attempts in addition to rushing for two TDs and 94 yards. Corral’s 68-yard touchdown toss to WR Braylon Sanders in the fourth quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the day.
Meanwhile, Tennessee’s offense rose to the challenge against an USC defense that boasted an average of only 17.4 points allowed. They were the clear victors by a 45-20 margin over the South Carolina Gamecocks. The team accrued 38 points in the first half and coasted on those for the victory. Tennessee’s QB Hendon Hooker was on fire, passing for three TDs and 225 yards on 23 attempts in addition to rushing for one TD and 66 yards.
Tennessee’s defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Gamecocks’ offensive line to sack QB Luke Doty four times for a total loss of 23 yards. It was a group effort with four guys contributing.
This next contest is expected to be close, with the Rebels going off at just a 2.5-point favorite. They have failed bettors playing the spread in their past two games, so buyers beware.
The wins brought Ole Miss up to 4-1 and the Volunteers to 4-2. A couple defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: Ole Miss is 224th worst in the nation in rushing touchdowns allowed, with 12 on the season. Tennessees have had an even harder time: they are stumbling into the game with the 171st most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up eight on the season. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
