Colorado football 2024 practice news: Camp storylines, Deion Sanders depth chart, schedule by Buffs insiders

Written by on August 10, 2024

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have their sights set on bowl eligibility in 2024. Sanders was hired by Colorado following arguably the worst season in program history in 2022 and instantly brought the program an unprecedented level of national attention. The Buffs have changed the way college football rosters are built, adding talent almost exclusively through the Transfer Portal. Coach Prime’s most notable Colorado football transfers, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, safety Shilo Sanders, and two-way star Travis Hunter, are all back for their second seasons on the Colorado football roster. Shilo Sanders continues to wear a non-contact jersey in practice as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery.

The Colorado football depth chart will be littered with new faces in 2024. The Buffaloes saw over 40 players from their 2023 roster transfer to other programs, and the team brought in a whopping 42 transfers and another 13 players from the high school and junior college ranks. With Colorado returning to the Big 12 in 2024, it’s bowl game or bust for Coach Prime. If you want to see the latest Colorado football camp news, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at BuffStampede, the 247Sports affiliate that covers Colorado.

Top Colorado Buffaloes practice storylines

Priority No. 1 for Coach Prime and his staff this offseason was getting better on the offensive line. Son Shedeur Sanders was the most sacked quarterback in FBS last season but he still managed to throw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns with only three interceptions during his first season as the starter.

Colorado took a big step towards protecting their starting quarterback by landing five-star recruit Jordan Seaton in the Class of 2024 and he’s expected to start at left tackle during his true freshman season. He’s one of at least 10 new offensive lineman that have been welcomed into the program this season and their progression in Season 2 of the Sanders era will be largely dependent on how that unit gels. Get more updates on how the Colorado offensive line depth chart is shaping up at BuffStampede

Another priority for the Buffs this offseason was getting better in the running game. While improving the offensive line will help, having a successful rushing attack will also help keep Shedeur Sanders upright more often in 2024. CU added transfers Dallan Hayden (Ohio State) and Isaiah Augustave (Arkansas) and signed true freshmen Micah Welch and Brandon Hood to compete with former walk-on Charlie Offerdahl for the top spot on the team’s running back depth chart. The team’s top four rushers from 2023 (Dylan Edwards, Anthony Hankerson, Sy’veon Wilkerson, and Alton McCaskill) all transferred to other programs.

Colorado will look to establish a 1-2 punch at running back before the team’s first game against North Dakota State. “[RB coach Gary Harrell] wants to identify two top backs going into the season, who will receive the bulk of the carries. It was the same approach he had going into the 2023 season, but due to offensive line struggles and scheme complications, the Buffs ground game never got churning,” Munsterteiger wrote on BuffStampede. Get the latest updates on the Colorado running back competition at BuffStampede.
