CHICAGO — After a thrilling Game 2 of the 2021 WNBA Finals that included a controversial incident involving Diana Taurasi and a referee, there was plenty of excitement heading into a pivotal Game 3 on Friday night. It didn’t last long, as the Chicago Sky quickly took control and cruised to a 86-50 win to go up 2-1 in the series. In the process, they set a record for the largest margin of victory in Finals history.
Already holding a comfortable lead, the Sky broke the game open in the middle of the second quarter with a thrilling 10-0 run highlighted by an acrobatic and-one from Kahleah Copper in transition. Her bucket extended the Sky’s lead to 19 points and electrified the crowd inside Wintrust Arena. Even with more than a half left of basketball, it was clear that the game was effectively over at that point.
Copper, who has been the Sky’s leading scorer all postseason, finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. Candace Parker went for 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Courtney Vandersloot added four points and 10 assists as she ran the show. In a rarity for a playoff game, the Sky’s starters didn’t even have to play the fourth quarter.
As for the Mercury, this is a game they’ll hope to forget as soon as possible. It was easily their worst outing of the playoffs, as they managed just 50 points and shot 16 of 62 from the field. Both of those marks were the worst of the season for the Mercury. Diana Taurasi finished with five points on 1 of 10 from the field, and Brittney Griner — 16 points — was the only player in double figures.
Game 4 is set for Sunday afternoon in Chicago, with the Sky just one win away from their first title in franchise history.
