The Year in Music 2022: GloRilla and others who broke out this year

Every year, a new group of artists catches mainstream attention thanks to record labels, streaming services and social media platforms. 2022 in particular saw the rise of GloRilla, a 23-year-old rapper whose single and video “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” is credited for her success.

The song went viral, earning praise from social media users and, more importantly, rapper Yo Gotti. He signed her to his Collective Music Group, and she hasn’t slowed down since: Big Glo secured a collaboration with Cardi B on “Tomorrow 2.” She also hopped on Ciara’s “Better Things,” was nominated for her first Grammy, and performed at the American Music Awards and BET Hip Hop Awards, during which she won the Best Breakthrough Artist award.

Here are some other stars who broke out in 2022.

Saucy Santana – It’s not his breakout year, but his singles brought him to new heights. The rapper was named MTV’s Global Push artist, and he was featured on albums including Latto’s 777. He appeared in a few festivals and took the stage with Madonna for a performance of “Material Gworrllllllll!” during Pride.

Muni Long – Muni Long started her career under the name Priscilla Renea, writing songs for the likes of Mariah Carey and Rihanna. In late 2021, she debuted her breakthrough “Hrs & Hrs,” which went on become a viral hit thanks to TikTok. She’s since earned recognition at the AMAs, Grammys and BET Soul Train Awards, and released her debut album.

Ice Spice – The Bronx rapper became a viral hit following the release of her song “Munch.” She made her Billboard debut after getting a cosign from Drake and is now one of BET’s Amplified artists.

Latto – The rapper released her second studio album, 777, which featured lead single “Big Energy.” The song was her first top 20 hit on the Hot 100 and the longest-charting solo female rap song. The remix featured Mariah Carey.
