Congratulations are in order for Spike Lee, who will be honored Wednesday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2023 Spring Gala. According to Vibe, he will be celebrated for making an impact in his field and in Brooklyn.
“It’s not an exaggeration to say, I would not have pursued a career in the arts if it were not for the work of Spike Lee,” BAM’s president, Gina Duncan, said in a statement. “His films opened my eyes at a young age, to the fact that films can be layered and complicated works of art that could be both artistically excellent and accessible.”
Lee has addressed issues of race, poverty, crime and more in his films, which include School Daze, Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods. He’s also produced a slew of television shows.
He’ll be honored alongside musician David Byrne and BAM Board of Trustee Claire Wood. WizKid and Woody McClain are expected to attend.
