Method Man returns to Power Book II: Ghost for season 3. Fans of the show know him as Davis McLean, a reputable, money-hungry criminal defense attorney, but Method says he has a dirty side, which “has been scratching the surface since the first season.”
“I mean, he was cheating on his wife … That shows that his moral code is a bit wonky,” he says. “Second season, you find out that he has this shady past, as most of the characters do. Even though he’s polished, he has a bit of dirt on him, and I love every minute of it.”
Some of that “dirt” will surface in Davis’ storyline this season, which will see his business conflicts with Cooper Saxe and his continued fight to free his brother from jail.
When asked what he loves most about playing Davis, Method says it’s “that people never saw me coming.”
“There’s still people who the first thing come out of their mouths when I do these interviews … first thing they write in print is rapper Method Man,” he notes. “Why can’t it just be entertainer? Why can’t it just be actor, since I’m doing that more than any hip-hop now? Well, Starz is making it so that I can break out of this small box and go find a bigger one for myself.”
Method recently earned his third NAACP Image Award for his role as Davis. He says he loves that he’s being recognized for something outside hip-hop.
“To be coming from the NAACP gives it a whole different [feel],” he adds. “That means that my people look to me and say, ‘You’re on the right path … You are inspiring, and you are not embarrassing your race.'”
Season 3 premieres Friday on Starz.
