Fantasy Football Week 4 Tight End Preview: Projections, DFS plays, numbers to know and more

We spend a lot of time and energy each week trying to decide what makes a tight end streamable. For me it’s some mixture of projected target volume, implied offensive points, and the talent of the player and his quarterback. But when you’re in that in-between range, between the good tight ends but not totally committed to streaming every week, it’s important to spend some time on the other side of that question. What makes a rostered tight end droppable?
This is a question that Fantasy managers with Dallas Goedert, Robert Tonyan, and Jonnu Smith have to be asking themselves as we head into Week 4. Al three of these tight ends currently rank outside the top 12 and between the three of them they have just 24 catches, 272 yards, and two touchdowns. That’s 3.7 PPR Fantasy points shy of what Travis Kelce has done by himself.
Tonyan is the easiest of the three for me. You drop him as soon as you think you’ve found someone who could be more than a touchdown-dependent streamer. Especially if you’re playing in a full PPR league. Tonyan has somehow been even less involved than he was in 2020, when he saw just 59 targets in 16 games.
Smith would be, in my opinion, the second most droppable. While his volume has been better than Tonyan’s, his quarterback is bad, and things are starting to trend in Hunter Henry’s direction. This could be exacerbated by Smith’s terrible Week 3 performance.
Goedert certainly isn’t in the can’t-drop discussion, but I’m far more hesitant. For one thing, he’s been quite a bit better than Tonyan and Smith. But, like Smith, Goedert had a bad drop in Week 3. And like Smith, he has a second tight end who is encroaching on his production. Zach Ertz has the same number of targets as Goedert on the season.
This week the discussion is mostly about Dalton Schultz and Tyler Conklin on the waiver wire. By that measure: I’d drop Tonyan for both, I’d drop Smith for Schultz but not Conklin, and I’d probably just hold Goedert as opposed to swapping out similar options.

Numbers to Know
- 11.1 — Mark Andrews‘ 11.1 air yards per target is tops amongst tight ends with at least 10 targets.
- 7 — A third of Mike Gesicki’s 2021 targets came in the fourth quarter or overtime against the Raiders.
- 68% — Dalton Schultz has played at least 68% of the snaps in every game this year. Blake Jarwin has yet to top 57%.
- 2 – Week 3 was Tyler Conklin’s second career game with double-digit PPR Fantasy points. He’s no sure thing moving forward.
- 96.3 — Travis Kelce is averaging a career-best 96.3 yards per game. He’s been worth every bit of that Round 1 price tag.
