The nominations for the 2023 NAACP Awards have been announced, recognizing the work of several African Americans across film, television, theater, music and literature. Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverand its accompanying cast are standout nominees alongside The Woman King and Quinta Brunson‘s Abbott Elementary.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Woman King dominated in the motion picture categories, earning 15 and 12 nominations, respectively, including nods for Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. Black Panther star Letitia Wright was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, while Tenoch Huerta is up for the male equivalent. Castmates Angela Bassett, Lupita N’yongo and Danai Gurira are among those listed for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
The Woman King‘s Viola Davis and John Boyega were nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Motion Picture, with Lashana Lynch earning nod for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
Leading in the television categories is Abbott Elementary. Abbott and its cast have earned a total of nine nods, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Quinta’s also nominated for Best Breakthrough Creative for her work on the show. black-ish was nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, with cast members Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Deon Cole, Jenifer Lewis and Marsai Martin getting nods for their characters on the series.
On the music front, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar lead the pack with five nominations. Bey’s nominated for Outstanding Female Artist and Outstanding Album for Renaissance, while Kendrick’s nods include Outstanding Male Artist, Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song for “The Heart Part 5” and Outstanding Album for Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
