Why Clemson can cover

Despite offensive challenges and uneven results, Clemson’s defense remains one of the best in the country. The Tigers lead the ACC in scoring defense, allowing only 12.2 points per game, and Clemson is No. 2 in total defense, yielding only 306.4 total yards per game. Clemson is a top-five passing defense, allowing 203.8 yards per game and an ACC-leading 5.8 yards per attempt. Opponents are completing only 60.8 percent of passes against Clemson, with more interceptions (five) than touchdown passes (four) in 2021.

On the ground, the Tigers will need to be strong against a potent Syracuse rushing attack, and Clemson leads the ACC in giving up only 2.7 yards per carry and only one rushing touchdown. Given that Syracuse is dead-last in the ACC in passing yardage (169.2 per game), Clemson can key on the run, and the Orange are also the worst team in the ACC on third down, moving the chains only 35.1 percent of the time this season.

Why Syracuse can cover

The Orange have been excellent in the running game offensively, leading the ACC in rushing yards, yards per carry and rushing touchdowns to this point. With that said, this matchup against Clemson is even more favorable for Syracuse’s defense, which has been strong this season. Syracuse ranks No. 3 in the ACC in total defense, giving up 308.2 yards per game, and the Orange rank in the top four in both passing defense (194.2 yards per game) and rushing defense (114.0 yards per game). Syracuse leads the ACC with 22 sacks, and the Orange are also No. 3 in yards per carry, giving up 3.1 yards per tote.

Syracuse can also take full advantage of a Clemson offense that is struggling mightily, as the Tigers are currently dead-last in the ACC in scoring offense (21.2), total offense (324 yards per game), yards per pass attempt (5.7) and completion percentage (54.8 percent).
